Computer Drivers
Why Update Computer Drivers?
There are hundreds of device drivers that are installed on computers, and the reason they are installed is to allow the software and hardware to work.
"Computer drivers help the operating system of a computer to communicate with the targeted device"
The device drivers that are installed in your computer allow for communication between the intalled program and your computer. It is kind of like reading a book, if you can read you can do this entirely on your own, but if you don't understand the written word you may have to have someone else to read it to you.
Drivers could be the hard drive that is responsible for the functioning of the computer in the first place or it could be individual device drivers or software drivers that are often downloaded from the Internet when you install a new program, some of which are know to make your computer to run slow.
In other words, a driver communicates with the intended device by working with the subsystem of the hard drive. As you call up a program by clicking on its icon, this initiates a process whereby the driver commands the device to operate. When the device sends back the required data to the driver, it will invoke specific routines in the program that initiated the call.
Computer Drivers: What is That all About
All drivers are specific to the operating system that uses them and are dependent on the hardware of the computer it is installed on. Simply put, device drivers work to translate the required actions of the hardware, and the operating systems application which is ready to use it. Some drivers operate in the abstract while others have physical characteristics.
Just think what you would do if you did not have the device driver installed for your Ethernet ports. There would be nothing you could do that would allow you to connect to the Internet. There would just be no communication between your service provider and your computer no matter what you tried.
By the same token drivers are typically installed when you add applications to your computer. Many times when you install a device like a printer, network cards, or sound cards to your computer, you will find a CD that will help you install the drivers needed to run these programs and print papers and pictures. At other times, when you are downloading a program from the Internet, the download includes a driver that is essential for the communication. Otherwise, even though you spend your hard earned money on the new program or equipment, you will never be able to use it.
While you may not want to add more to your computer than is necessary because filling up that much needed space can cause problems with your much needed computer, allowing device drivers to be installed with the programs you need is critical to the operation of that program.
So, the next time you are ready to install something new on your computer, pay a bit closer attention to what is actually going on. You will probably never be told during the installation that a driver is also going in, but that is exactly what is happening.
Why is it Important to Update Computer Drivers?
Just as there are a large number of drivers that are installed on computers there are also a good many reasons to install a new driver. Many times drivers need to be updated due to bugs being present in the system. At times drivers will be installed incorrectly through no fault of the user, and at other times they need to be updated.
By installing a new driver, the device it is attached to will run better, with fewer freezes and crashes and much more smoothly. Compatibility issues with software and hardware on a computer are another instance where new drivers or updating is required.
Typically, when the operating system of a computer is updated or upgraded newer drivers are automatically installed. However, this is not always so. There are some times that you may have to initiate the updating because for some reason the driver has stopped working after an update has been installed. Many times there is no way of telling when such a thing will happen, but if this should happen finding an updated version should fix the problem.
- Manually update computer drivers
If a device on a computer should stop working the driver can be checked by clicking on the control panel. Once at the menu of the control panel, select ‘device manager’. Locate the driver that is not functioning correctly and click ‘properties’.
A number of options will appear and you will want to click on the ‘update’ option. You may need to insert the disc that came with the device you are trying to work with. The wizard will search for the appropriate driver on the disc, and install it. If you do not have the installation disc you may have to search the Internet for the driver.
It can be a pain to have to update drivers manually especially if you have lost the disc that came with the device. While searching the Internet may turn up the correct driver, if you don’t know how to look you may be up a creek.
- Automatic update computer drivers
With software programs that scan every driver on a computer it is much simpler to keep all the drivers on a particular computer up to date. By installing an automatic updating program the user is able to rely on it to keep track of when updates are required, and have them installed as needed.
As a rule, it only takes a few minutes to complete the whole process and have the computer up and running again at full pace. The benefits of having a computer up to date in every area is that there is little down time and fewer errors and crashes, which means that the user is a happier person.
